Great learning doesn’t happen by accident. It starts with good design – design that’s connected to outcomes, based on evidence and worth a learner’s time, and that’s the thinking behind Moodle LMS 5.3.
This long-term-support (LTS) version takes into account some of the key, most cited challenges and requests from the Moodle user community and focuses on: outcomes, assessments and feedback improvements, and the overall learner experience improvements.
Learning outcomes in Moodle
Learning Outcomes tools in Moodle 5.3 help educators connect why, what and how – what learners are expected to achieve and how learning is delivered and assessed.
Starting with ‘why’ = greater clarity and motivation for learners
Moodle 5.3 starts with why. It defines clear outcomes, whether for a single course or organisation-wide, and connects outcomes to activities. Answering the ‘why am I doing this’ question first, helps learners with taking ownership of their learning and staying motivated.

Assessment related improvements help with the ‘how’
Once learners know why and what they are trying to achieve, they need to understand how they are going to get there. Assessment feedback is an important part of the how. In higher education, grading needs to be fair and consistent while taking into account multiple marker feedback. Moodle LMS now brings multi-marker feedback together in one place, making it easy for learners to find, understand and act upon it.

Multiple marker feature in Moodle is not new to this version but does come with improvements. You can now add optional markers, as well as choose the number of optional markers. This is handy for moderation or sample marking – you can switch one on for submissions that need a second look.
Another assessment improvement is quizzes now have a due date that’s separate from a close date just like assignments. Learners know when they are expected to finish but they can still submit after that and late attempts are flagged as overdue.
You can also set different due dates for different students or groups allowing flexibility without complex workarounds.
Interface improvements: A calmer place to teach and learn.
Moodle 5.3 aims to reduce the time and energy that people are wasting on trying to figure out where to click. This means getting the interface out the way and leaving more time for teaching and learning. Course layouts are cleaner and content is easier to navigate.

And it’s not just about the interface either, the content editor is enhanced with more options for content layout and organisation.

The dark mode – the most voted request in the Moodle tracker, is another exciting improvement.

Moodle AI Subsystem
Moodle AI Subsystem continues to build on flexibility, choice and control. You choose how AI fits your goals, your priorities and your level of readiness.
In Moodle 5.3 Anthropic is added as AI provider alongside others that are already supported.
AI use visibility
Instead of guessing how learners are using AI in your course, teachers can see who is using AI, in which activities and for what kinds of requests e.g. to generate text or to summarise text. Separate group rules apply and everything is designed with privacy in mind.
Reporting improvements
Reporting improvements include more time-based aggregations in the Report Builder, role risk visibility and enhanced global search.
