Moving House: an LMS Migration Journey
Just like relocating a household, transitioning a Learning Management System involves careful planning, methodical packing, strategic moving, and thoughtful settling into a new space. Melbourne Polytechnic’s LMS Migration Project represents a major institutional relocation to Catalyst IT’s Moodle Managed Service—driven by the need for greater flexibility, enhanced user experience, and long-term financial sustainability.
This presentation explores the strategic decisions, technical milestones, and collaborative efforts that enabled a seamless transition with minimal disruption across a diverse educational community. Operating within a compressed timeline from February to July 2025, the project team navigated complex challenges including theme-related access restrictions, integration errors, and mobile editor limitations through intensive vendor collaboration and innovative problem-solving.
The institutional “move” prompted comprehensive renovation of learning support resources and delivered a robust training program totalling 71,646 minutes of professional development. Like any successful relocation, this migration achieved significant cost efficiencies—delivering over 20% savings while positioning the institution for future growth and adaptability.
Framed through the metaphor of “moving house,” this presentation unpacks the renovation of legacy systems, the careful transport of critical educational data, and the complete redecorating of the user experience. Attendees will gain practical insights into managing complex educational technology transitions with strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and unwavering attention to institutional continuity.
