An intuitive tool to support teachers, as they make judgements of students learning

The Progress and Consistency Tool (PaCT) is designed to support teachers as they make half yearly judgements about students’ progress and achievement.

The project had some complex requirements and we had to design for some unique user interactions, while also making it responsive. We also had to create a new visual identity for the tool and carry that through the design process.

With PaCT it was absolutely crucial to design a usable, intuitive experience that allows teachers (who are often time poor) to handle complex assessment information with absolute ease. Therefore it was essential to include users in the development of the tool; we needed to get this right. Integral to the development process was regular testing of the designs and the solution with teachers, creating a continuous feedback loop from this very passionate user group.

Throughout the project we spoke to literally hundreds of teachers – either through direct testing of prototypes or in group workshops where we canvassed their needs and validated our approach to certain interactions.

We were lucky enough to have a period of in field testing where we had approximately fifty schools pilot the PaCT tool for a limited time. Their 'real-world' use of the tool gave us invaluable feedback, allowing us to refine the tool and tailor fit it to the target group.

The users were very vocal in their praise of the opportunity to be involved in the process and the way their opinions were integrated into the design thinking.
